Sewing 102: They & Them Comfy Shorts (Size & Gender Inclusive)
Saturday, May 20th @ 11:00 am - 6:00 pm
$155Do you know how to operate a sewing machine, and have wanted to start making your own clothing, but you’re feeling a little overwhelmed? We got you. In Sewing 102: They & Them Comfy Shorts, our expert sewing instructor Hayley will guide you through all the steps to produce one pair of simple, elastic band and drawstring shorts using chambray fabric. So, whether you’re outside doing a park hang on a Saturday, or you’re inside lying glued to your couch on a Sunday, these shorts are a perfect, cozy option!
In this class, you will learn about:
– reading, using, and altering your pattern
– measuring yourself for your pattern
– cutting your fabric
– sewing French seams
– constructing interior and exterior pockets
– working with elastic waistbands & drawstrings
This is a two-session class. The first session is three hours and focuses on altering your paper pattern and cutting your fabric. The second session is six hours (plus a break for lunch) and focuses on sewing your fabric pieces together and completing the construction of your pair of shorts. Session date/times are:
Session 1: Tuesday, August 22nd – 7pm-10pm
Session 2: Saturday, August 26th – 11am-6pm
By the end of this class, you will have officially become “pattern literate”, and you’ll leave with one freshly constructed pair of comfy shorts, as well as your own sewing pattern to use on future projects. We will be using the popular Forest & Thread pattern “The They & Them Shorts”. Refer to our photos here for a better glimpse at how they’ll look. When signing up for this class, you will have two options for your pattern size. If you fall between XXS – 1X, choose the first option. If you fall between XXL – 8X, choose the second. Please contact us if you have any questions about this.
Prerequisite: To attend this class, you MUST have taken either Sewing 101 or Sewing Bootcamp at WorkshopSF. (We’ll also take you if you’re already competent and comfortable using a sewing machine.) We’ll briefly go over the Janome 2212 at the beginning of class. If you have questions about the sewing skill level required by this class, please email us.
Supplies Needed: None. We will supply all of the chambray fabric, elastic strips, drawstring material, etc. to complete your project. Colors may vary based on availability, but we will normally offer you a choice of black, lighter denim blue, or a rotating, seasonal pattern.
