Let’s demystify weaving! We will teach you the basics of beginner’s weaving, including how to warp a loom, how to weave with a needle and shuttle, and how to add yarn. Using an 8.5″ X 11″ pop out loom and simple weaving tools, you will apply these skills by making your first woven tapestry! Each small tapestry will measure around 8″ X 10.5″. Along the way, you will learn decorative weaving techniques such as Rya (adding tassels) and Soumak (creating that braided look). You will leave class with your own woven tapestry, a small loom and weaving tools. You’ll also be able to pick the instructor’s brain on where to get more supplies, and where to seek out new techniques.

Black Sheep Goods – Learn How to Weave Kit: For this weaving class, we are excited to partner with Black Sheep Goods, a Nashville-based business that produces beautiful woven goods as well as a fantastic starter kit for weaving! As part of this class, you will receive a Learn How to Weave kit that includes a pop out loom (8.5″ X 11″), 10″ wooden dowel, and five mini skeins of yarn that equal to 150 yards total (enough yarn to make roughly three woven wall hangings). For more information about Black Sheep Goods and photos of this kit, please visit: http://www.blacksheepgoods.com/weaving-kits/loomkit.

Supplies Needed: None. We will supply loom, tools, and yarn which you will take home with you.

Instructor Bio: Becca Schillinger earned her BFA in drawing and painting from CCAC here in San Francisco, and was trained by drag queens in NYC on how to paint a fashion-week worthy face. Knitting is her zen craft practice and she skypes with her 93 year old grandmother for advice on projects constantly. Becca teaches many of our fiber art workshops in addition to knit and crochet, such as punch needle.
