In this day-long basket weaving bootcamp, instructor and fine craft basket weaver Peeta Tinay will guide you through the fundamentals of basketry as you construct your own small-sized basket!  Peeta will demonstrate the over/under and twining techniques using dyed round reed, and will walk you through establishing the basket base, weaving the sides, and finishing the basket.  Ample hands-on attention will be given to each student during the weaving process.  Both beginning basket makers as well as those with no experience at all are welcome to join this class.  Each student will leave with one completed basket and a 4-page handout containing the materials punch list for this project, supplier list for ordering weaving materials and tools, and basketry guild information.

Skills learned in this class:

– How to shape the basket

– Methods to use for tension and hand placement with the weaving materials

– Useful basketry tools

– How to select weaving materials for future projects

– Dyeing and finishing round reed baskets

Please Note: Hand strength is required for basket making.

Supplies Needed: None. We supply all tools and weaving materials for this project.  Please note that you’ll have a quick break for lunch in the afternoon, so we recommend bringing a lunch or grabbing something quick at Gus’s Haight Street Market located a couple blocks away.
