Woodworking Instructor

WOODWORKING INSTRUCTOR

WorkshopSF is looking for a fun, engaging, knowledgeable woodworking instructor to join the ranks! We will be rolling out a series of new woodworking classes this year, so we are looking for someone who is not only proficient in the skill of woodworking and excited to instruct, but also open to help us further build and develop this course series. Classes in the Workshop woodworking program generally focus on a single project, using a specific set of tools and woodworking methods. The goal is not only to produce a project, but also build skills and offer expertise with certain tools, such that students feel comfortable continuing to use these tools and methods once the class is completed.

This role will primarily own the following responsibilities:

– Lead woodworking classes ranging in length from 3-6hrs
– Be fully responsible for all details related to the execution of your class
– Review and demonstrate safety standards to ensure students are safely using tools and minimizing their risk of injury
– Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the tools and methods used in class, as well as instruct students in proper practices to learn these tools and methods
– Float during class, spending equal time with each student and adjusting your teaching style for students who may be struggling
– Though not required, we prefer someone who is eager to grow this program and assist in developing new woodworking classes once existing classes are mastered

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

– 3+ years of woodworking experience
– Strength to lift wood for class and help students carry projects, usually no more than 40lbs
– Knowledge of types of wood, cuts and measurements
– Comfortable with various assembly techniques
– Fluent in hand & power tools, as well as operations and safety for each (see below for general tools list)
– Strong attention to detail and safety best practices
– Fun, outgoing, yet patient teaching style with an ability to build students confidence
– Ability to troubleshoot quickly to assist student when they have hiccups or make mistakes
– Prefer candidates located in San Francisco and/or East Bay

TOOLS YOU NEED TO KNOW:

– Chop and Mitre saw
– Drill press
– Routers
– Jigsaws
– Sanders (mouse, orbital, band)
– Drills and drivers
– Air compressor, nail gun, brad nailer, crown stapler
– Table saw / Band saw / Circular saw – (at present, these are not part of our curriculum, so this is nice to have but not completely necessary.)

Pay is dependent upon number of classes taught, and will be determined with candidates during the interview process. Applicant must be free to teach a minimum of 2 classes per month, with weekend availability.
