Sewing 102: Wiksten Shift Dress $145
sewing

In this Sewing 102 class, you will learn all of the basics of sewing a dress from start to finish! Professional clothing designer Alex Lunt will guide you through each seam and step of the process, including: following a pattern, cutting the fabric, doing a surge hack on a home machine, using/making bias tape, hemming, top stitching, pressing, and using a binding maker. Each student will use natural linen as their dress fabric (as pictured above), and will leave class with a Wiksten pattern and fully finished dress. You may even want to wear this one out of class!!

We will be using the Wiksten Shift Dress + Top Sewing Pattern, which is a small independent pattern company based in Portland. (Please note that we will only be teaching the "dress" portion of this pattern for class). When signing up, please go over the size chart and select the size based on bust size. This dress runs small, especially through the hips, so we recommend sizing up. Email us with any size questions, or if you feel you don’t fit within the size range and we can help you out!

Prerequisite: In order to attend this class, you MUST have taken either Sewing 101 or Sewing Bootcamp at WorkshopSF. (We’ll also take you if you’re already competent and comfortable using a sewing machine.) We’ll briefly go over the Janome 2212 at the beginning of class. If you have questions about the sewing skill level required by this class, please email us.

Supplies Needed: None. The fabric that you will receive for this class is the natural linen that is pictured above, and generally cost around $60-$70 when purchased from fabric stores. You will also receive an official pattern from Wiksten so you can make additional dresses, which retails for $20. More information about this pattern and photos of the dress can be found on the Wiksten website here.

Instructor Bio: Alex Lunt is a designer who has called San Francisco home for the past nine years. With a degree in technical fashion design, she used her sewing and patterning skills after graduation to start a clothing brand, Nettle Studios. You can usually find her sitting at a sewing machine listening to true crime podcasts on full volume. Check out more of her work at https://www.nettlestudios.com/.
