Sewing 102: Haori Jacket $150

In this sewing 102 class you will make your very own Haori, which is a common Japanese word for a kimono style jacket! This class builds off of knowledge learned in our beginning sewing classes, and is a great next step in learning the machine further and how to make clothing. The jacket features patch pockets, a traditional Haori collar, and a long enough length to make it cute with jeans/pants/or even over a dress!

This is the first 102 class to offer a fully lined garment where all seams are enclosed! You will build off your previous knowledge of French seams and rolled hems, and apply your skills to learn how to set in a dropped sleeve, how to hem something with lining, and really perfect your edge/top stitching abilities. Other skills covered are proper ironing techniques, and using interfacing to stabilize a collar.

We will be using the Wiksten Haori pattern, which is a small independent pattern company based in Portland. All jacket fabric will be pre-cut ahead of time to give us more time to sew, but you will leave with your own copy of the pattern to then take home and make as many as you’d like!

When signing up for this class, please pick a size based on your chest and arm length. If you feel you don’t fit within the size range offered, email us so we can help you out! We try our best to be size inclusive and we don’t want anyone to feel turned away!

Prerequisite: In order to attend this class, you MUST have taken either Sewing 101 or Sewing Bootcamp at WorkshopSF. (We’ll also take you if you’re already competent and comfortable using a sewing machine.) We’ll briefly go over the Janome 2212 at the beginning of class. If you have questions about the sewing skill level required by this class, please email us.

Supplies Needed: None. The fabric for this class is the navy linen that is pictured above, and generally cost around $50-$60 when purchased from fabric stores. You will also receive an official pattern from Wiksten so you can make additional Haori jackets, which retails for $20. More information about this pattern and photos of the jacket can be found on the Wiksten website here.
