Embroidery 101: Hand Embroidery Basics $48

In this beginning embroidery class, you’ll learn basic techniques for hand embroidery, including four different stitches (satin stitch, split stitch, stem stitch, back stitch), how to transfer a pattern, prep your hoop and different finishing techniques. We’ll also dispel the myth that embroidery is scary and hard and talk a little about embroidery traditions from around the world, with examples.

By the end of class, you’ll have a small sampler (examples of stitches), a contemporary, original pattern created by the instructor Emma McGowan, and an in-progress embroidery piece that you can finish at home. You will receive a reference guide of the stitches learned in class. You’ll also have the confidence to take on your own embroidery projects, like a new tote for the farmer’s market or a sweet design to spruce up an old denim jacket!

Supplies Needed: None

Instructor Bio: Emma McGowan comes from a family of craftswomen and has been fascinated by needlework for years, but she didn’t actually learn how to do it herself until she traveled to Guatemala and was blown away by the handiwork done by Mayan women. So she bought a hoop, some thread, a needle, and taught herself how to make her own beautiful designs. When Emma is not embroidering, you can find her writing about feminist issues, reading (a lot), sewing outlandish clothing, and experimenting with new crafts projects.
