Urban Gardening: Learn To Build And Care For A Mounted Herb Garden $58
Urban

In Urban Gardening: Learn to Build and Care for a Mounted Herb Garden, professional gardener Tory Van Wey will teach you how to build, fill, and care for a living, breathing mounted herb garden! Great for urban settings such as patios, small outdoor porches, sunny kitchens, and even fire escapes, mounted herb gardens are wonderful for cultivating fresh herbs that can be used for cooking, seasoning, or cocktail making.

First, you will design the look and layout of your herb garden, choosing from a few different stain finishes and styles before getting handy with a drill to build your wooden base mount. After prepping and staining your wood mount, you’ll move from woodworker to gardener as Tory teaches you about the different herbs and plants that are "city friendly". You will plant up to three different herbs in terra cotta pots. Then, you will learn how to properly care for your plants, how to deal with common pests, and what to do if your garden goes belly up (ANSWER: Freak out, obnoxiously curse Tory’s name, then demand your money back PRONTO! Just kidding..... ish.) You will leave class with one mounted herb garden in tow, a handout covering garden care, a supplies list for building future vertical gardens, and Tory’s recommendations on the best local garden stores to buy plants and seeds.

PLEASE NOTE: Your herb garden will measure approximately 6" by 24", and will weigh approximately five (5) lbs. Keep in mind that you will need to have some means of transporting this garden back to your home. We recommend bringing a tote or grocery bag to carry your garden home.

Supplies Needed: None, but since you’ll be working with dirt and wood, you may want to wear clothes that you don’t mind getting a little dirty. We’ll have aprons that you can use, just in case.

Instructor Bio: Tory Van Wey was first bitten by the gardening bug at the age of six, when her mother showed her how to make and tend a backyard vegetable patch. As an impatient kid, she learned how to make a mean fried green tomato. Her passion for gardening grew to encompass sustainable agriculture, permaculture, and mycology, with a recent turn towards sustainable urban gardening. Tory is also a freelance illustrator with a BA in Graphic Design from Loyola Marymount University, whose work is heavily influenced by the natural world and her time in the garden. You can see her illustration work at www.toryvanwey.com.
