Freshman Letterpress: Not A Hallmark Card $60

In Freshmen Letterpress: Not A Hallmark Card, you’ll work with instructors Taylor Reid and Erin Fong of Western Editions letterpress company to create a set of 10 assorted greeting cards (wayyy better than anything from Hallmark). The set will include four birthday cards, four thank you cards, and two "Oops" cards, for those moments when you accidentally ate your roommates leftover pizza or forgot your brothers birthday!!

You will use an antique Vandercook Proofing Press and print from vintage wood type. You will learn a bit about the history of letterpress printing and the basic set up of the press. You’ll then hand-crank your own set of cards-one by one-and customize each by lining the envelopes from as sorted paper (patterns, colors, old books, dictionaries, and encyclopedias). Do yourself a favor and buy some stamps before hand- you’ll be so happy with your printed goods you’ll want to send these out ASAP!

supplies needed: none

VERY IMPORTANT: THIS CLASS TAKES PLACE AT WESTERN EDITIONS STUDIO LOCATED AT 505 BRODERICK STREET. THIS CLASS DOES NOT TAKE PLACE AT WORKSHOPSF! THERE WILL BE A SIGN AT 505 BRODERICK STREET FOR WESTERN EDITIONS STUDIO.

teacher bio: Western Editions is comprised of Erin Fong and Taylor Reid, two friends living in the Western Addition neighborhood (...get it?), who share a love for letterpress, design, giggles and all around cute-stuff. Erin and Taylor both learned printing in the same small tiny press in the upstairs library at the University of Nevada, Reno and lo and behold coincidentally landed in San Francisco at the same time years later. Taylor worked at a commercial letterpress print shop in SOHO and had a residency at The Center for the Book Arts in New York City. Erin currently works at Peter Koch Printers and John Demerritt Bookbinding. Both have done time at SFCB. Erin and Taylor keep it real by freelancing design and letterpress work, selling their wares at local shops and events, baking cupcakes and riding bikes to the ocean.
